Manufacturing Companies as Good Global Citizens

Recent news indicates that auto manufacturers Toyota, Subaru and Honda in the U.S. and elsewhere are encountering a shortage of automobile parts due to the earthquake in Japan. This will affect the manufacture and sales of automobiles as well as automobile parts and auto repair for an unspecified time.

I visited an electronics and medical device trade show in Boston last week and learned from a rep there that indeed, these industries also expect manufacturing and shipping delays due to the unfortunate situation in Japan.

To state the obvious, these manufacturing issues are far less urgent than the day to day concerns facing the Japanese people in the areas affected by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear facility leaks. What becomes more clear with each passing day is how connected we all are here on planet Earth. The disasters, physical or financial, affect each of us. Doesn't it follow, then, that goodness and wisdom can affect us all as well?

It's said that the gentle flapping of butterfly wings on one side of the world creates a breeze on the other side of the world. True enough. Why is that significant? Only as a reminder to live our lives and run our businesses mindfully, as even the smallest thought or action counts, not only for ourselves, but in the lives of those oceans away. Stated another way, responsible global citizens make a positive impact.
